5 Tips for Bringing Your Date to a Work Event

DATELINE: NORWELL, MA…There’s a swanky work event coming up and the boss has made it clear that attendance is mandatory. Most of your colleagues and clients who will be attending it are married. No one expects you to fly solo, so bringing a date to the big event is imperative.

The challenge is whether or not your date is up to it. First impressions are everything, and in the work realm, who you bring as a date to an event can have lasting repercussions on your career.

Dating expert Paul A. Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating, one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services with more than 60 offices nationwide, has been helping singles maneuver the dating cubicles for decades.

Falzone shares five tips for bringing a date to a work event:

*Invite your date well ahead of time to the event to ensure that your date is not only available, but that s/he has enough time to prepare for the event. Advanced planning gives your date plenty of time for getting a haircut, buying a dress, renting a tux and so on. At the very least, you should ask a week in advance.

*Make sure your date has all the details of the event. S/he will need to know whether the affair is black tie or a more casual event in order to wear the proper attire. You should also inform her/him of where and when it will take place. Is it an awards ceremony? Will there be a four course meal or simply hors d’oeuvres? Will there be dancing or is it more of a networking event? What will be expected of her/him?

*Brief your date on the “who’s who” of the event. Be sure s/he knows (and understands the importance of) the “players” at the event such as C-level executives, key clients and anyone else you need to make a good impression upon.

*Above all, choose your date carefully. If you know that s/he is extremely uncomfortable in social situations or tends to imbibe a little too much, you may want to reconsider asking her/him to accompany you to a work event.

*Don’t invite a date out of guilt. So, you really like this guy you’re dating, but you just know he would not be a good fit for the event. Listen to your instincts. You know your boss, colleagues and clients better than he does and there are times when it’s best to keep business and your personal life separate. First impressions count, especially in the corporate world.

“Who you bring as a date to a work event reflects on you. You may be dating the sweetest person on earth, but if they have trouble stopping at one glass of wine and end up getting drunk, it’s going to embarrass you and your company and at the very least, your sound judgment will be questioned,” said Falzone.

He continued, “Trust your own judgment. If you have confidence in your date and have covered all the bases by asking her/him in advance and briefing her/him about the event, you should be able to rest easy.”

Dating Should Be Easy

without comments

~44% (~110 million) of the population is single. With numbers like that, dating again should be easy, but successful dating requires some preparation. Dating Coach, Kira Sabin, says discovering your single self means being emotionally and mentally ready to date. While pressure from family and friends might make you feel like you should be dating, it’s important to want that for yourself. Another aspect of being newly single, says Paul Falzone, CEO and founder of The Right One, is “feeling emotionally and physically positive about yourself. With dozens of online dating sites, there’s no shortage of profiles. However, both experts feel that off-line dating has more to offer, with Sabin noting, “60% of people meet through friends.” FULL ARTICLE @ BUSINESS WATCH (page 21)

What NOT to Do on Valentine’s Day – Whether You’re in a Relationship or Single

without comments

No cash for that expensive gift or extravagant romantic getaway? No problem. Valentine’s Day is about so much more. It’s a time to share the day with your sweetheart and show how much you care and appreciate him/her.

“While your finances may not allow for a romantic getaway to Hawaii or the diamond and platinum earrings from Tiffany’s, there are other ways to show your partner how much s/he means to you.” explained Paul A. Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating, the industry’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services with more than 60 offices nationwide. He continued, “Don’t make the mistake of letting the day go by without doing something. Just because we’re in a recession doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t honor the day.”

People who are dating or in a serious relationship often have high expectations for Valentine’s Day – the most romantic day of the year. There’s no getting around the day, but, you can avoid disappointing your sweetheart. Falzone shares insight on what NOT to do:

*Don’t pretend you didn’t know the date and that Valentine’s Day just slipped your mind. Unless you’ve just come out of a coma, this excuse has been the end of many a relationship.

*Do not wait until Valentine’s Day to announce that you have made plans for you and your date. The “fake out” or acting like you’re not going to do anything on Valentine’s Day, only to then spring the surprise on him/her is treading dangerous waters. If you’re going to do something nice for your sweetie on Valentine’s Day, why not take the credit.

*Don’t be late for your date. Being on time shows you value your date’s time and company.

*Don’t forget to make dinner reservations or buy tickets well in advance. Waiting to be seated at a restaurant for hours or standing in long lines for tickets really puts a damper on the evening.

*Don’t talk about the price of your Valentine’s Day gift, be it candy, flowers, dinner, etc. No one wants to hear how much you spent. Ever hear the phrase “can’t buy me love?”

*Don’t be away (if you can avoid it) or otherwise unavailable on the most romantic day of the year. In a way, Valentine’s Day is similar to New Year’s Eve. Everyone wants to have someone to kiss (whether it’s midnight or not doesn’t matter). Even those who have only been dating for a couple of weeks tend to make a point to see each other, or at the very least, talk on the phone and swap Valentine’s Day cards.

*Don’t be inconsiderate. You’re significant other is sure to appreciate the grand gesture of a romantic Valentine’s Day, just be sure that whatever you’ve planned to do, you BOTH enjoy it. Taking your sweetheart on a romantic ski weekend won’t go over well if s/he doesn’t ski; can’t tolerate the cold and hates snow.

*On that same note, don’t go into debt by booking an extravagant trip, especially if you are in a relationship and your finances are combined. You really should discuss it with your significant other before making plans.

*Do not personally deliver your flowers to her office. Part of the Valentine’s Day fun for women is to be paged or called to the front desk to pick up their flowers and listen to the “oohs” and “aahhs” of colleagues as they head back to their desk.

*Don’t forget the kids when it comes to passing out Valentines. Including them with cards and candies earns big “Brownie points” from all parties.

*Do not surprise her/him with the gift of a new pet – no matter how adorable that puppy, kitten or other creature may be. (Unless of course you’ve already discussed it at great lengths with your sweetheart and know that is what they truly want.) A pet is a major responsibility and should never be sprung on anyone.

*Don’t stress if you don’t have a date or a significant other. Make plans to go out with other single friends to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Rent a romantic Valentine’s Day.

without comments

Dinner and a movie. It makes for a great date night any day of the year, but can be even more special on Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately, with times being tough for many, the luxury of a night out might not be an option this year. According to love expert Paul A. Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating–one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services with more than 60 offices nationwide—a candlelit dinner at home followed by a romantic movie can be just the ticket for couples feeling the sting of the recession.

“Valentine’s Day is not about who spends the most, but spending time with your loved one. And with the selection of the right movie, that quiet night at home can be even more special,” said Falzone.

With the advent of online movie rental services, you can pretty much have your pick of Hollywood’s all-time romantic movies. On Falzone’s must-see, Valentine’s Day list are:

? An Affair to Remember (1957), starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr
? Love Actually (2003), starring Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson
? Moonstruck (1987), starring Cher and Nicolas Cage
? Officer and a Gentlemen (1982), starring Richard Gere and Debra Winger
? Sleepless in Seattle (1993) starring Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan
? Casablanca (1942), starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman
? Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard
? It Happened One Night (1934), starring Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert
? Love Story (1970), starring Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw
? Romeo and Juliet (1968), starring Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey

“These movies can make for a great matinee and set the tone for the day, or a nice way to relax and enjoy the end of your romantic evening,” says Falzone. “Regardless of what you watch, what really matters is who you’re watching it with.”

Valentines Day dates for $10 or less

without comments

Just because we’re stuck in the middle of a recession, doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate Valentine’s Day. In fact, there are many ways to celebrate this lover’s holiday without breaking the bank. And according to love expert Paul Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating–one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services with more than 60 offices nationwide—many of those date ideas for Valentine’s Day won’t even require a trip to the ATM.

“Sure, the economy could be in better shape. But should that really matter when you’re sharing Valentine’s Day with someone you care about? We all know the answer to that one. Of course not,” said Falzone. “When it comes to Valentine’s Day, if people start to think with their hearts and not their wallets, they’ll discover a world of possibilities for romantic Valentine’s Day dates.”

For example,
• Sunrise or sunset trip to the park or another location where you can snuggle up on a bench with comforter and hot chocolate to watch the sun come up or down.
• Laundry date: Trip to the local laundromat; clothes have got to be cleaned anyway. Bring a picnic basket. Sharing washers and dryers recoups any expenses.
• Attend a poetry reading at your local library or bookstore, many of which are free—save the price of any lattes or coffees. Your local newspaper’s calendar section should have the info. Better yet, find your favorite poem, dress in a black turtle neck, buy some instant espresso from the grocery store and host your own poetry reading.
• Netflix chick flick movie marathon – Get a trial Netflix membership and rent all the chick flick/Valentine’s Day classics (An Affair to Remember, It Happened One Night, Casablanca).
• Valentine’s Day pot luck – Share your Valentine’s Day meal with two or three other couples with each bringing a dish.
• Sledding (not just for kids)
• Ice skating (some outdoor and indoor rinks are less than $5 per person if you have your own skates)
“When we were kids, Valentine’s Day meant cut-out hearts that you snuck into the locker of the person you had the crush on. We lost track of that ‘it’s the thought that counts’ approach to the day. Frankly, when it comes to Valentine’s Day, the only bottom line that really counts is that you’re with the one you love,” said Falzone.
