Late Life Romance
Relationship Expert Encourages Single Seniors to Take Advantage of Technology and Practice New Dating Etiquette
DATELINE: NORWELL, MA…
As Unmarried and Single Americans Week (September 20-26th) is upon us, it is important to remember that a significant number of singles today are seniors.
According to U.S. Census Bureau News (July, 2009), there are 15.8 million single Americans who are 65 or older. These older Americans account for 16 percent of all unmarried and single people age 18 and older. Many of these seniors have found themselves single again after a divorce or the death of a significant other. Although many single seniors don’t wish to remain single, it can be hard to get back on the horse again after so many years out of the dating scene.
According to relationship expert Paul A. Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating, “Dating isn’t just for the young. It’s for the young at heart. Age doesn’t matter.”
As the CEO of one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services, Falzone has paired thousands of clients during more than 35 years in business. A large number of these singles were people over the age of 55 looking for friendship and love.
“When you’re a single senior, you’re looking for many of the same things that singles of any age are looking for – someone to spend time with who shares your interests and who has those qualities that you find attractive,” explained Falzone.
Take Advantage of Technology
Falzone encourages single seniors to learn more about and take advantage of technology. A traditional brick and mortar dating service that uses high-tech matchmaking software to match members in conjunction with matchmaker consultation services is ideal for single seniors. This type of “high touch” matchmaking service, such as The Right One or Together Dating’s, will help you get back out into the dating scene. Even if you don’t think you’re ready to look for love just yet and are more interested in making new friends, this type of dating service can be instrumental in introducing you to others who share your interests and who are also looking for friendship.
Many seniors are already knowledgeable about social networking sites such as Facebook and use it to correspond with their children and grandchildren. For those who aren’t familiar with it, Facebook is a great way to communicate with family members but you can also use it to get back in touch with folks you probably haven’t seen in a while such as former colleagues or high school and college classmates.
Have a hobby? Then there’s probably a “Meetup Group” for it. From quilting, photography and sports to dining out and more, you may find others with similar interests online at Meetup.com.
New Dating Etiquette
For single seniors who haven’t dated in a long time, perhaps even decades, Falzone advises of the new dating etiquette:
- Meet in a public place by your own transportation. Play it safe until you get to know the person.
- Men and women now split the bill. Don’t commit the faux pas of expecting one person to pay for everything. Both parties should offer to pay their share and be prepared to do so. Be sure to have cash on hand in case plastic isn’t on the menu.
- Don’t air your “dirty laundry”. Problems with your ex or your adult children? Conflicts with families or former partners are a natural part of life, yet there’s no need to share the burden early on.
- Dating is about BOTH people. Dating is and always will be two-way, with plenty of listening and communication. You should work around both of your schedules and interests when arranging a date and deciding where to go. One person doesn’t get to call all the shots.
- Guard your personal information and your assets. Know that there are many people who are quick to take advantage of the loneliness of seniors. Be aware that not everyone you meet may be a person of substance, ethically and morally.
- Be safe. Tell a friend or someone else close to you, where and with whom you are going on your date. If you can’t reach anyone, call your own voicemail and leave a detailed message and any contact info you have about your date.
Falzone continued, “Something that hasn’t changed is courtesy. Courtesy transcends the generations. Confirm your date, be on time and conclude it comfortably. If you want to see each other again, great, but if not, that’s okay too. Go on your date with no expectations, and be sure to end it on a polite note. Most importantly – be yourself and be honest and sincere.”

Matchmaking guru: Vacation fling may not lead to ring, but can still be a good thing.
DATELINE: NORWELL, MA…
Stella may have gotten her groove back via a “fling” with a man 20 years her junior in the movie How Stella Got Her Groove Back. Yet according to matchmaking expert Paul A. Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating, a vacation fling can be just the ticket to reboot your love life—even if you don’t end up walking down the aisle like in the movie.
As the CEO of one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services, Falzone has paired thousands of clients during more than 35 years in business. While he does not advise clients to have an affair on a trip as a way to find that special someone, he does see a parallel with the vacation fling and finding Mr. or Ms. Right.
“The whole premise of ‘Stella’ was that here was a woman in her late 30s, who was so busy with her career and raising her son she forgot about taking care of herself as a person. We work with many people in a similar scenario,” said Falzone. “Whether you hook up with anybody or not, a fun vacation can be a great way to learn more about yourself, meet new people and just let your hair down and enjoy your life, which is an important step towards finding and attracting that special someone.”
So, if a fling is not the goal of a vacation, how do you get your groove back? Falzone recommends:
- Visit a place you’ve never been before – A change of scenery is one thing, but if it’s a place you’ve always wanted to see, it’s so much better.
- Take a tour/trip with other singles – Forget the ugly stereotypes of sleazy “singles” tours/cruises. There are many people who just want to get out, see new things, meet new people… and also happen to be single.
- Incorporate physical activity in your trip – Hiking, biking, swimming, dancing, wherever you go on your vacation, make sure there’s some sort of physical activity involved. Sitting on a beach and drinking pina coladas might sound nice, but it’s not really the way to invigorate your body and mind. Again, this is where activity-oriented group trips can be a great way to meet people.
- Investigate new cultures – If you can swing it financially, take a trip to a foreign country. Learning about a different culture can be another great way to recharge your batteries.
Adds Falzone, “This may sound kind of strange, but the vacation fling you should really be after is one with yourself. Vacations can be a time for rest and relaxation, but they can also of self-discovery—or rediscovery. That’s really how Stella got her groove back and got her man.”

Master Matchmaker discloses how to diffuse the “I love you” bomb

Master Matchmaker discloses how to diffuse the “I love you” bomb.
DATELINE: NORWELL, MA…
In the new romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer, Joseph Gordon Levitt’s character finds himself in a place you want to be in a relationship. You know, when that new person you’ve been seeing touches your heart in a way where those three words—I love you—suddenly seep into your consciousness. The only question is, “does he or she feel the same way?” And do you risk losing what you’ve got by invoking those three small words into your relationship?
Paul A. Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating–one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services with more than 60 offices nationwide—has paired thousands of clients during more than 35 years in business. He also has a few thoughts on when you should and should not say “I love you.”
“Well, on your way to the restaurant on your first date might be too soon and the night you celebrate your one-year anniversary is probably a bit late,” said Falzone. “Seriously, the key really is not when you say it, but that you’re really sure you feel it. Because let’s face it, saying those three words will change your current relationship one way or the other. So it’s important to have your thoughts together rather than just blurting it out.”
Falzone recommends:
• Writing out a list of why you love the person you’re seeing. Include the reasons why, not just that you do.
• Ask yourself honestly if this is a relationship you want to take to that next level. Allow yourself to daydream a little bit about where you think it could go.
• Write your boy/girlfriend a love letter stating your feeling for them. Include the three words in their just to see how it feels. You don’t have to send it.
• Practice saying it in the mirror. It may sound silly, but when the time comes you’ll want to look your beloved in the eye and deliver your ‘I love you’ with confidence.
• Hope for the best, but plan for the worst: no response or ‘I don’t love you’. Sure, you want to think positive, but it is possible that the other person may not feel the same. Or that they might not be in the same place right now.
Adds Falzone, “The most important thing is you want the moment you tell somebody you love them to be special. So, plan a special dinner, take them to the site of where you met, buy a bottle of champagne, you name it. If he or she reciprocates, you’ll want to celebrate. “
And what if he or she doesn’t reciprocate?
“Obviously, that’s not the preferred answer, but by making an effort to make the moment special, you do earn that person’s respect if not their love,” said Falzone. “And you can most definitely hold your head high for having the courage to listen to your heart and make your feelings known. That’s really the only way you will find your true love.”

A pre-date contract, really? How getting it in writing can lead to the altar

A pre-date contract, really? How getting it in writing can lead to the altar
DATELINE: NORWELL, MA…
We’ve all heard about pre-nuptial agreements, but a pre-date agreement? Why would you need one? What’s in it? Is it legally binding? Are people really making their dates sign one prior to going out?
More than a mere trend, pre-date agreements have become more commonplace in recent years. While not legally binding documents, these agreements do put in writing the expectations people have of the other person going into the date, during the date and in the aftermath. Not surprisingly, laying your cards on the table and letting the person you’re dating know you’re serious has many beneficial results.
The Right One and Together Dating, one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services with more than 60 offices nationwide, doesn’t require its clients to sign a pre-date agreement. Yet you can count CEO Paul A. Falzone as a support of pre-date agreements.
Said Falzone, “Most people’s initial reaction to a pre-date contract is ‘what about romance?’ and ‘doesn’t a written agreement get in the way of chemistry?’. The truth is a pre-date contract acts like a checklist for yourself to make sure you’re in a good place to begin a relationship. If anything, it’s pretty healthy way to go about it.”
So what terms can you find in a pre-date contract? Some things to include:
- Punctuality – arriving on time and ending at a reasonable hour
- Attire – agree on type of attire prior to date (casual, business casual); bathing and other hygienic measures prior to date mandatory.
- Terms of discussion – agree to not talk about exes and the big three (sex, politics and religion); also no complaining about work, the weather, etc.
- Physical contact – keep it to a minimum; friendly pecks on the cheeks or abbreviated hugs are acceptable; spending the night, not so much.
- Alcoholic intake – with respect to the above bullet, stick to a one drink per hour maximum.
- Paying the bill – as equal partners in this first date, split the bill evenly.
- Honest post date feedback – agree to provide your date with an honest appraisal of the outing within a 24-to-48-hour time period.
“Most things in a pre-date agreement are fairly common sense. Yet there’s something about putting these things in writing that make you think about what it is you’re doing,” said Falzone. “That’s not a bad thing. In fact, once both people know the expectations and the ground rules, it makes it easier to enjoy the date and let the relationship begin or end.”

Putting the great in the “great outdoors”…How outdoor dates give you the upper hand in romance

Putting the great in the “great outdoors”…How outdoor dates give you the upper hand in romance.
DATELINE: NORWELL, MA…
It’s spring and love is in the air. Did you ever wonder where that expression originated and how love and spring became intertwined? Chances are it had something to do with the beginning of the nice weather that figuratively and literally opens the door for outdoor dates.
Outdoor dates provide not only an affordable date option, but a chance to get creative and actually romance your date. And that’s something Paul A. Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating–one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services with more than 60 offices nationwide—knows a little something about.
“People get so hung up on impressing their dates by taking them to fancy places that they lose sight of what actually wins somebody’s heart—you. Something as simple as a walk in the park is a great date because it gives you the chance to actually get to know the person you’re dating,” said Falzone. “Not that outdoor dating is strictly about cutting costs. It’s mostly about concentrated one-on-one time with the person you’re dating and actually doing and seeing the world around you in the process.”
Some outdoor dates Falzone recommends:
* A trip to the local farmer’s market – a green date and a chance to find out more about your date’s likes and dislikes—both foodwise and otherwise.
* Outdoor concert – many cities and towns hold free concerts in the common areas and parks. Perfect for spreading out a blanket for an evening picnic.
* Hiking and walking trails – a little communing with nature by hiking on local walking trails or woods is a great way to spend an afternoon.
* A bike ride – find a local bike path or create your own ride. If you don’t own a bike, rentals are, in general, fairly affordable. Bike paths in particular are a great way to have a leisurely ride and get to know your date.
* Row, row, row a boat – another romantic activity that doesn’t a whole lot. If your town has a river, pond or lake nearby, chances are you can rent a boat, even in the city.
* Star gazing – whether it’s from the roof of your apartment building or in the city park, spreading out a blanket and watching the stars is about as romantic as it gets.
* Take me out to the ballgame – minor league baseball is another great take that’s affordable and fun.
“When you get right down to it, it’s about connecting with people. Being outside in the fresh air without the distractions of everyday life really helps that process. And since outdoor dates tend to be more affordable than indoor dates, you can go on that many more of them and that only helps the process along,” said Falzone.
